Physics Week 25: RC circuits in DC

This week of the Ron Paul physics course focused primarily on DC circuits. Lots of diagrams were drawn out and practice problems were given.

Lesson 1:

  • Capacitors in parallel
  • Capacitors in series

Lesson 2:

  • Charging a capacitor

When the switch of a circuit closes the capacitor begins to charge.

  • RC time constant

The product of the resistance and capacitance is called the time constant.

Lesson 3:

  • RC circuit applications
  1. Flashing lights
  2. Pacemakers
  • Effective resistance of the body

Ohms laws still apply. If the body has a high effective resistance and comes in contact with a voltage source, they will experience a small current. If they have a low resistance, they will experience a large current.

Whether a person is wet or dry or grounded will affect the persons resistance.

Lesson 4:

  • Voltmeter

Used to measure volts

  • Ammeter

Used to measure current
